Long Dan Xie Gan Tang ( Decoction of Gentian Purging Liver)
Ingredents: Long Dan Cao Huan Qin Ze Xie Mu Tong Dang Gui Sheng Di Huang Cai Hu Sheng Gan Cao Che Qian Zi Actions; Purges the sthenic fire liver and gallbaldder, removes dampness and heats from lower energizer. ( 1) Sthenic fire flaming up syndrome of the liver and gallbaldder marked by hypochondriac pain, headache, conjunctival congestion, bitter taste, deafness, awelling of ear, red tongue with yellow tongue coating, taut, rapin and forceful pulse. ( 2) Downward flow of dampness And head syndrome of the liver and gallbladder marked by swilling of vulva, pruritus, polyhidrosis araund external genitals, stranguria yellow and greasy tongue coating, taut rapid and forceful pulse. Analysis of the syndrome and treatment: This Formula is the common formula of treating sthenic fire flaming up, and downward flow of dampness and heat of the liver and heat. When the fire of the liver gallbladder rises along the meridian, it will cause headache, conjuctival congestion, bitter taste and swilling of ear; when the fire involves the hypochondrium, the liver qi wll get stagnated, giwing rise to hypochondriac pain ; when the dampness and heat of the liver and gallbladder flow downward along the meridian, this will pruritus, swilling of vulva, polyhidrosis araund external genitals, leukorrhagia with foul odor. The treatment lies in purgating sthenic fire of the and gallbladder, and removing dampness and heat of the lower energizer. Explanation of the formula: In the formula, Long Dan Cao as the monarch drug not only purgates sthenic fire of the liver and gallbladder but also removes dampness and heat from the liver and gallbladder. Huang Qin and Zhi Zi clear heat and purgate fire, concurrently dr dampness. When the two ingredients are used with Longdan, the three ingredients remarkably purgate sthenic fire of the liver and gallbladder and serve as the minister drugs. Ze Xie Mu Tong and Che Qin Zi remove heat and dampness. When they are used together wiht Long Dan Cao the four ingredients excellently eliminate dampness and heat of the lower energizer. Dang Gui and Sheng Di as the adjuvant ingredients nourish yin and tonify blood, expel dampness without comsuming yin; Chai Hu promotes qi flow of the liver and gallbladder, and guides the drugs to enter the liver and gallbladder meridians; Gan Cao mediates all the ingredients protects the stomach and serves as the adjuvant and guiding drug. All the ingredients used together possess tonification within purgation, naurishing within promoting, ascension with descension. These methods descend fire, clear heat and remove dampness. Diseases occurring along the meridians may all be cured. Clinical application ; ( 1) Main points syndrome differentiation: the main poins of syndrome differentiation include hypochdriac pain, headache, conjuctival congestion, bitter taste, yellow urine, red tongue with yellow or yellow greasy tongue coating, taut, rapin and forceful pulse. ( 2) Modification: In case of severe sthenic fire, remove Mu Tong and Che Qian Zi and add Huang Lian to enhance the potency of purgating fire; in case if excessive dampness and mild heat, remove Huang Qin and Sheng Di and add huan Shi and YiYi Ren to strengthen the potency of eliminating dampness; in cse of severe heasache and conjunctival congestion, add Ju Hua Sang Ye and Xia Ku Cao to clear heat from the liver and improve eye sight; in case of penis sore, swollen scrotum with severe pain and feverish sensation , remove Chi Hu add Lian Qiao Huang Bai and Da Huang to purgate fire and remove toxin. ( 3) Modern application: the formula is applicable to intractable hemicrania, hypertension, acute cholcystitis, acute pyelonephritis, acute cystitis, urethritis, vulvitis, testitis inguinal lymphadenitis, acute pelvic inflammation, herpes zoster, etc. due to sthenic fire syndrome of the liver meridian, or dampness and heat syndrume of the liver meridian. ( 4) Cautions; The formula consists of mainly bitter and cold ingredients, and easily impairs the spleen and stomach. Stop the adminitration while the formula curing the disease. The formula should be used with caution in ptients with asthenia of the spleenand stmach.
